Valentine’s Day is approaching and what better excuse to show your cat love? But how exactly do you show your feline friend just how much he or she means to you? Here are some tips and hints on ways to shower your kitty with affection.
Converse with your kitty
Research from Fancy Feast®, shows that seven out of 10 cat owners talk to their cat as if they’re human and 20% of us even meow back to our cats. This is great because cats love vocal interaction. So, make sure you chat to your cat this Valentine’s Day and beyond to let them know just how much you adore them.
Give treats
Why not give your furry friend a tasty treat or his favourite food to show your love. In fact, why not go all out and make some homemade kitty treats. This recipe from The Cookie Rookie for tasty salmon treats is super simple (Heck, it only requires three ingredients. Not even I could stuff up this recipe!) and your meowing buddy is sure to love them. Nothing screams ‘I love you’ more than home-cooked treats, right?
Spruce-up your meowing mate
Sure, cats are great at grooming themselves. They do it often and they do a darn good job. But, cats also like to be groomed by us humans (well, some of them do!). So, this Valentine’s Day, show your cat love by giving him a good grooming session (assuming he likes being brushed!).
Grooming can help your feline friend to feel relaxed. It also helps keep Felix’s coat healthy and shiny. Talk to your cat as you groom him and he’ll feel super special.
Feline fun
Cats thrive on mental and physical stimulation, so they absolutely love to play games—especially with you, their beloved owner. Wondering what games to play? Try to appeal to all their feline senses. Incorporate sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. You may want to incorporate toys such as objects with something noisy inside, such as a bell or squeaker. Or how about using different fabrics and even some edible treats? Try a few different games and see which one your purring pal seems to enjoy most.
Cats can show us love too
Did you know that your meowing mate performs common acts on love for you on a daily basis? Maybe you’ve been missing these shows of affection and adoration. Well, not any more, as animal behaviourist Dr Jo Righetti explains the five most common acts of love cats carry out to show their owners just how much they care. Aaawwww!
The cat chat of lurrve
Our cats can communicate with us through their body language, posture and gestures to show us just how much we mean to them. A tail held high in the air as they walk towards us is their greeting tail. Cat meows, chirrups and purrs can be a sign of love. In fact, many cats do a combination of a purr and meow usually when they want to be fed, when you return home or to get your attention. Whatever the reason is, it’s a very endearing sound.
The flirtatious roll
Most cats don’t like to show their vulnerable belly-side to potential threats, so if your cat rolls over in front of you, it means they trust and love you. Their rolling behaviour is a subtle act of love, wanting to receive pats and attention. If that is not love, then I don’t know what is!
Making eyes at you
Have you noticed your cat watching you? Perhaps they have a subtle glance as they snooze or are sprawling out across your chest or lap. Most cats enjoy eye contact with their owners, which shows you they are relaxed and enjoy your company, i.e. they love you!
Following you around
When your cat has bonded to you, they will seek your company. They may follow you from room to room, showing they undoubtedly love you by always wanting to be with you. Although some cats also enjoy their independence, most cats enjoy time close to their owners. You may wonder if your cat may be looking for their next meal, but given the choice of human, cat, toys or an attractive scent, the number one choice for cats is their owners – that must be love!
