Over the years, pets have evolved from being a strange and wonderful distraction to an integral part of families all over the world. As human populations have grown, so too have pet populations, and with so many pets on the planet it’s fascinating to see just how this population is dispersed.
It’s no surprise that man’s best friend, the dog, is the most loved household pet, but did you know fish and birds were a close second? What drives certain countries to be so pet obsessed, while others are seemingly uninterested? Did you know that Brazilians love small dogs while Saudis prefer the bigger breeds?
Read on to learn which nations have the world’s largest populations of dogs, cats, birds, and fish, and some other interesting pet facts from around the world.

For us humans, as well as our cats and dogs, life can be unpredictable. This means that at any time in his life your beloved four- legged friend can suddenly fall ill, or sustain an accidental injury. If this happens, you want to be able to give your pet the care he needs and deserves.
With Pet Insurance in place you can have the peace of mind knowing that you will be able to afford vet fees if something unexpectedly goes wrong and you won’t have to worry about borrowing money, dipping into your savings or even worse being faced with a hard financially based decision about the treatment that you can give your pet.

Wow! such a great list. The US is on top in the majority of the pet’s population. You should also cover some other aspects such as top dog breeds, top cat breeds, fish breeds, birds, and others.
Great list!! No wonder the US always on top 1 because there’s a lot of Animal lovers there!
Great list, what about Portugal?
Do you have any references for this compilation? I am looking for some direct information on cat and dog ownership, and seeing as this is a compilation, on a pet insurance website, I can’t exactly reference it itself. Not that I am questioning the information you’ve provided. Don’t feel obliged to respond, as this article is a couple of years old.
Hello Hank, yes it is an old article. We removed the citatations as the links were not working – due to the age.
Hello, I’m a student doing a project on the impact that animals have on people’s lives and I would like to reference your work in my writing. I can’t find the date this was published on, but I’m assuming it’s sometime between 2017 and 2019?
Hello Lorel, yes 2017 is right. It’s a pretty old article. Liz
Hi, the 2018 numbers in Brazil are 54.2 million (not 35) dogs and 23.9 million (not 12) cats according to the Instituto Pet Brasil. Domestic birds are 39.8 million (not 191). Fabio
The tables in this post are completely useless because they don’t relate the absolute numbers to each country’s population.
What a great list!! It’s no surprise the US is always number one, since there are so many animal lovers ther
