The Exotic Shorthair cat is a Persian cat in all aspects except for its coat, which is short. Other than that, this breed has the same looks and personality as a Persian and is even included in the Persian breed section of cat shows. The Exotic Shorthair has been selectively bred in the US in the 1960s by crossing the best American Shorthairs with the best Persian Longhairs.
This is a medium-sized cat of 4-7 kg with a big round head, flat face, small ears, strong chin, short snub nose and large round eyes. It comes in all the colour variations as the original Persian, including white, black, cream, blue, Himalayan and tortoiseshell. The Exotic Shorthair’s coat however is shorter (medium length), very dense, soft and quite easy to maintain.
This lovely feline is a great choice for people who love the overall looks and gentle nature of a Persian but don’t like the grooming requirements. The Exotic Shorthair is just as affectionate and easy-going as the Persian cat. It generally gets along fine with children and doesn’t mind being left home alone, making it a suitable pet for any type of household.
While the placid, sweet-natured Exotic Shorthair enjoys just watching you and sitting on your lap, it also has a wonderful curiosity and loves to play. You may find your cat following you around the house and talking to you in its soft voice, trying to get your attention.
Because the Exotic Shorthair is a docile, quite inactive cat, it doesn’t need much food and you should watch its diet so it doesn’t become obese. Other than that, this is a healthy breed and you can expect your Exotic Shorthair to live into its early teens.
