PETstock’s charity organisation, PETstock Assist, has partnered with Doggone Gorgeous, Ruff N Rugged and PetRescue to help facilitate the delivery of more than 3,000 dog coats to 50 charity organisations across Australia.

The donation was made in support of the #nonudepets campaign. This national initiative has been rolled out to help ensure animals currently in foster care waiting for their ‘new home’ are kept warm, dry and comfortable.

Taking action for the love of animals

Indeed, the not-for-profit rescue organisations and animal shelters that house surrendered and abandoned animals rely and operate largely on financial donations and support from local communities.

PETstock Assist’s Charity and Events Coordinator Jessica Curtis says, “High demand items such as apparel, food, bedding, treats and toys help free up cash for other vital areas of the shelter’s operation. Thanks to PETstock Assist and its partners, donations like these not only provide rescue animals with much-needed comfort, warmth and, of course, style—but also supports organisations and their network of volunteers and foster carers who are helping to care for and create better futures for rescue animals in need.”

Among the 50 organisations to receive the coat donations are: Greyt Greys Rescue, Happy Paws Animal Rescue, Great Dane Rescue and Rehoming, A Mini Rescue Animal Shelter, Greyhound Rescue, Working Paws Dog Rescue, Best Friends Animal Community and Phoenix Animal Rescue Horsham

The lowdown on animals in need

Did you know that every year approximately 200,000 dogs and cats are euthanised in Australia’s animal shelters and pounds because they can’t be rehomed? That’s a pretty significant number.

The fact is Australia’s animal overpopulation crisis and animal homelessness is a big problem. Yet, according to PETA, the solution is simple. The answer is mandatory desexing laws and breeding bans.

Of course, there will always be people who ignore or choose to break these laws. However, pet lovers are urged to take the necessary action to help stop the crisis and support animal welfare. PETA urges you to do the following.

Don’t delay desexing your pet

Cute and cuddly puppies and kittens are capable of becoming parents themselves. So, it’s super important not to delay getting your young fur friend desexed. Furthermore, there are plenty of vets, councils and other organisations that offer discounts for desexing. Check out the National Desexing Network for more information on low cost desexing.

Make your pet a partner for life

Choosing to bring a pet into your life should be a lifelong commitment. You are making an unsigned pledge to love and care for your new four-legged friend for the rest of his or her life. Indeed, this is why it’s crucial to take the decision to adopt a pet seriously. You must ensure you have the time, money and ability to give your new pet the care he or she deserved.

Don’t shop, instead adopt a pet

Given that there are thousands of wonderful pets waiting in animal shelters across Australia waiting to find a new home, potential pet parents are encouraged to adopt, rather than shop.

Adopting, rather than shopping for a pet goes some way towards reducing the number of animals living in shelters or with foster parents.

Identify your pets

Thousands of pets arrive in animal shelters and pounds every year because they haven’t been wearing a pet ID tag. Properly identifying and microchipping your pet is part of your duty as a responsible pet parent. Taking these simple actions will help ensure that should your pet get lost, he or she is likely to be returned to you.

You see, together we pet lovers can help address animal overpopulation and support the welfare of our furry friends who haven’t yet found their forever home.
